Postsocialisms Unbound: Connections, Critiques, Comparisons

چکیده

Over the past twenty years, we have learned a great deal about the ways in which pervasive forces of transformation have enveloped the citizens and states of the former Soviet bloc. The analytic rubric of "postsocialism" has played a crucial role in this body of scholarship by enabling conversation and comparison among diverse studies spread across a massive region of the world. It is increasingly apparent, however, that the salient encounters and transformations of the early twenty-first century are inadequately un derstood if we limit the scope of our analyses to the geographical boundar ies of eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, or even the catchall "Eur asia." These days, Russia's private and nationalized oil and gas companies compete around the world in a heavily politicized marketplace of natural resource exploration, consumption, and production. Former Soviet and east European tourists, traders, laborers, and entrepreneurs cycle through the markets of Turkey, western Europe, and more distant destinations. Ac tivists promoting the rights of indigenous peoples draw upon expanding networks that connect Siberia to South America and the Arctic to Africa.

Relationship between exposure and nonspecific binding of thirty-three central nervous system drugs in mice.

Unbound fractions in mouse brain and plasma were determined for 31 structurally diverse central nervous system (CNS) drugs and two active metabolites. Three comparisons were made between in vitro binding and in vivo exposure data, namely: 1) mouse brain-to-plasma exposure versus unbound plasma-to-unbound brain fraction ratio (fu(plasma)/fu(brain)), 2) cerebrospinal fluid-to-brain exposure versu...

Four Neuroimaging Questions that P-Values Cannot Answer (and Bayesian Analysis Can)

Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) is used pervasively in neuroimaging studies, despite its known limitations. Recent critiques to these tests have mostly focused on technical issues with multiple comparisons and difficulties in interpreting p-values. While these critiques are valuable, we believe that they overlook the fundamental flaws of NHST in answering research questions. In this...

An Investigation on the Effects of Aggregates Properties on the Performance of Unbound Aggregate Base Layer

Unbound aggregates are the most common type of materials used for construction of the base layer of flexible pavements in Iran and worldwide. Due to the lack of binder, the performance of the compacted unbound aggregates is highly dependent on the properties of the gravel (particles remaining on sieve 4.75mm, sand (particles passing sieve 4.75mm and remaining on sieve 0....

Analysis of National Institutes of Health R01 Application Critiques, Impact, and Criteria Scores: Does the Sex of the Principal Investigator Make a Difference?

PURPOSE Prior text analysis of R01 critiques suggested that female applicants may be disadvantaged in National Institutes of Health (NIH) peer review, particularly for renewals. NIH altered its review format in 2009. The authors examined R01 critiques and scoring in the new format for differences due to principal investigator (PI) sex. METHOD The authors analyzed 739 critiques-268 from 88 unf...

Leveraging Comparisons between Cultural Frameworks: Preliminary Investigations of the MAUOC Ontological Ecology

Many theoretical cultural frameworks have been proposed in the literature. For comparisons and critiques of these frameworks to make sense, community members have to assign similar-enough meanings to the terms that they use when interacting. This entails overcoming the challenge of dealing with the imprecise and interpretable definitions conveyed in frameworks due to the use of common language....
